We are all about transforming life chances

ALC transforms the life chances of those children, young people and families in Aberdeen who face inequalities in their formative years that could act as barriers to social mobility.

Set up in 1924 by local businesses under the name Aberdeen Lads’ Club, and rebranded to ALC in 2025, the charity has played a pivotal role in the lives of hundreds of local children, their families and the wider community, helping them to lead healthy, happy lives.

How is ALC different to other charities?

A sample of findings from a survey of service users, supporters and partners conducted in 2023

“They gave us life lessons and confidence. I think that’s why we’re happier now; they led us in the right direction and helped us to be the people we are today. They make you into a person that believes in yourself.”
Chelsea Davie, Service User

“It’s a really special service for young people [thanks to] its specialism in early years learning and continuity through the pre-school, primary and secondary years.”
Ross Grant, Councillor

“…they get respect from the youngsters, because they actually ask them what they want and make up programmes for them; that makes a difference.”
Aileen Davidson, Tillydrone Community Network Chairperson

“We’ve had generations come through ALC, that speaks volumes for what we do for the community. Even when people move out of the area, they still put their kids here; they want the same experiences for their youngsters as they had themselves.”
David Wood, ALC Staff Rep

“…the only provider of toddler to teens activities in the area that’s completely open to everyone.”
Fiona Young, Tillydrone Community Flat Development Worker

“It makes a really strong contribution to the community.”
John Merson, Lighthouse, Donside Community Church

”When children come to our services, we’re not just there to support the children but the family as a whole.’’
Angie Johnston, ALC Manager
